The purpose of the Missouri Compromise was to determine a way to balance the admission of free and slave states into the union. This basically stated that territories north of Louisiana, except Missouri, would have to be free states, thus balancing the number of free and slave states, but was repealed in 1854 for the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the introduction of Popular Sovereignty.
