What was the purpose of the Doomsday Book?

0

Domesday Book is an inventory of all the property owned by the English people at the time of it’s publication. The purpose was to assess the wealth of the people and thus have a better understanding of how much tax to levy upon them. So in effect, apart from the historical importance of Domesday as an ancient document, it’s basically a sort of massive national tax return. John Brown of Easington has 5 sheep and a pig, a small barn and three acres etc. That sort of thing. John Brown of Easington will pay one sheep as tax this year etc. Domesday Book on-line http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/ Easington Co. Durham England http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=e… You may not find Easington in Domesday book, because a separate Domesday Book of the North was published some few years after Domesday the original.
