What was the purpose of the Book of Genesis?
The word ‘genesis’ means ‘beginnings’, and the writer documents the earliest history of the world and its inhabitants. He later records the history of the Hebrew race. The origin of sin is documented in the Fall, as is the establishment of God’s Covenant with Israel. It has both a historical and biographical purpose, since it contains details about key Jewish patriachs and also extensive genealogical information on individuals and nations.
