What was the purpose of the apollo 11 spacecraft?

Reg Tedious is incorrect, the Apollo Lunar Module was called LEM during the earlier days of Apollo, and that term stood for Lunar Excursion Module. Later on, still before any manned Apollo flights, the word Excursion was deleted from the spacecraft’s name, and the abbreviation thus, was shortened to LM. The Apollo 11 spacecraft was actually two spacecraft, the Command & Service modules, that took the crew to and back from the Moon, and the aforementioned LM ( Which had two parts, Descent Stage, and Ascent Stage – The 2 men who landed the LM were in the Ascent Stage ). When both spacecraft were manned and flying separately, each got a specific name for each ship. On Apollo 11, the CSM was Columbia, and the LM was Eagle. Eagle, of course, became the first manned spacecraft to land on the Moon, and then, depart from it.
