WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF MOST SCULPTURES IN ANCIENT EGYPT?
While there are statues of nobles and scribes most ancient Egyptian statuary falls into two categories. The first to honor the pharaoh and his Great Wife and family members, and mark significant victories and events of his reign.On his death when he would be portrayed as Osiris.Examples of this can be found at Dier el Bahari where at the temple of Hatshepsut she is shown as Osiris in huge statues that mark the first level and portico of the funerary temple. The other main category of statuary is statues depicting the gods and goddesses.These were found in temples and in the innermost sanctum of each temple,called “the holy of holies” a special statue of the primary god or goddess to who the the temple was dedicated would be held. This statue was though to embody the god or goddess it represented.
