What Was The Production Run Of The Series 3 Land Rover?
The Series 3 Land Rover had the longest production run of any Land Rover utility vehicle, stretching from 1971 to 1985 and racking up over 440,000 units built during that time. The Series 3 replaced the 2A but, in reality, there were few substantive changes except the introduction of a fully synchromesh gearbox. The wheelbase options of 88 and 109 inches remained the same as did the leaf spring suspension. Apart from the gearbox, updating was largely confined to trim, including better heaters and a more modern, less utilitarian, dashboard. Engines remained the same as the 2A. However, there was late in the production run the introduction of the Series 3 Stage 1 V8, which sported the same 3.5 litre engine as the Range Rover, giving the Land Rover its first taste of factory-fitted performance. Today, Stage 1 V8s are highly sought after and don’t come onto the market that often.
