In the beginning, the county we now know as Greece consisted of city states which had their own customs and tradition, and they had their own laws and systems of government (kingship/monarchy/tyranny/oligarchy/democracy/etc) and to an extent their own religions. These cities had a common language (Greek) albeit with different dialects, which also changed as time progressed. Even now ‘Greekness’ is not generally defined as being within certain geographical boundaries. There are many Greeks living in America and Australia (and everywhere else).
