What was the point of the Salt March, lead by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930?

He wanted the Indians to become independent of British rule, so he was trying various ways to show that Indian citizens did not need the assistance of the British anymore. One way he wanted to show that was using the Salt March. One product that Britain supplied to India was salt. Gandhi led his followers to the final location (sorry, can’t remember where they went) and they made their own salt, drawn from the salt water of the Indian Ocean (again, double check me on that). By making their own salt, the Indians were showing that they could function independently and demonstrated that they wanted the British out of India.
