Robert E. Lee’s favorite horse was named Traveller. Robert first saw Traveller in 1861, and bought him in 1862 for $200. Robert rode Traveller for the remainder of the Civil War and throughout his Presidency at Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. Robert is buried in Lee Chapel on the campus of Washington and Lee University, and Traveller is buried outside Lee Chapel.
