The Mayan Long Count calendar was used by the Mesoamerican cultures to identify what day it was. In the same way that Monday April 21, 2008 means something to you. Nothing more than words and numbers to tell one day from the next. They used different words from the ones the Gregorian calendar uses. Instead of Day, Week, Month… They used Kin, Uinal, Tun, Katun, and Baktun. Their counting system was based upon 18 and 20. Not the same as our 7 day week or our 30 day month. But simply because they used a different counting system, does not make their calendar a mystery or a predictor of events. The Mesoamericans did not count to infinity like we do. This is not unusual for past cultures. In fact, there was an African tribe that only counted to 8. The Mayans counted to 13 baktuns. At that point, count began again at 1.
