France in the 18th century was a very hierarchical society. The monarchy was very powerful, and the nobility and the church together owned the majority of the land in France. The church was known as the First Estate, the Nobility were the Second Estate, and everyone else comprised the third Estate. The Third Estate covered a wide variety of different kinds of poeple, in included professional men like doctors and lawyers (most of the leaders of the french revolution werer lawyers), wealthy merchants, prosperous farmers, poor farmers, tradesmen and craftsmen, servants, etc. In France, as in other countries, the population expanded during the 18th century.
