The largest wave recorded in modern times was tsunami (soo-NAH-mee) that appeared off Ishigaki Island, south of Japan, on April 24, 1771. It threw an 827-ton block of coral more than one mile. Tsunami is a Japanese word. “Nami” means wave and “tsu” means overflowing. Tsunami’s have been seen traveling at speeds of 490 mph (790 kph). They are usually caused by underwater earthquakes.
