What was the inspiration for the Kewpie Doll paintings?
The series of Kewpie Doll paintings started in 2003. I think Kewpies are so cute that I was very inspired by the way they look, feel and smell. I wanted to develop those Kewpies into my paintings, this was where the idea started from. “Cuteness” in art is something we generally associate with Japanese art and popular culture; is there something new you can bring to the concept? This is a very good question. I adore Japanese animation, art and pop culture. I feel my work always reflects what inspires me. Is there something new I can bring to the concept? I would like to. I feel I am always searching ways to translate my ideas and thoughts. Let’s talk again in ten years about this subject. Hopefully by then, I will have more input of what I can do and have done.
