What was the idea behind the Lagos Black Heritage Festival?
I think I am now speaking on behalf of Prof. Wole Soyinka, the consultant to the project. We have had the first and the second Black Heritage, but this third one was a festival with a difference. The Governor in his wisdom decided to bring in Soyinka as consultant, knowing very well that there will be good mileage for Lagos State, the whole country and black people in general through the festival, and Prof. Soyinka brought the intellectual aspect to the festival. For example, if you had looked at the line up of programmes, you would find that there was a colloquium. I think the earlier editions of the programme did not have a colloquium. But the colloquium was not the only intellectual aspect that brought intellectualism into this project. Every aspect of the production and events in the festival had a bit of intellectual approach to it, even the dances and drama. It was not just about bringing dances or drama to the festival.
