What was the Ernest Rutherford Gold Foil Experiment?

0

Well i can tell you about the experiment and i believe you can find a lot of documents in the internet speaking about the experiment. Rutherford took a very thin foil of gold and passed a beam of cathode rays over it and caught them back on a Zinc Sulphide screen after passing through the foil. The following are his observations : 1. Most of the cathode rays got rebounded. 2. Some of the rays got deflected to wider angles. 3. A very few rays had no deflection and travelled in straight line after passing through the foil. And with these he concluded the following : 1. The atom consists of a huge positively charged particle at the center. And that is why most of the cathode rays got rebounded. 2. The positive charged particle is concentrated along the center of the atom. 3.There is some amount of free space inside the atom that some of the cathode rays travelled without any deviation. Hope that helps!
