Mostly it was “street theater”. Wandering minstrels would stop on a corner and play an instrument, perform juggling tricks, or recite poetry…things like that. There were also occasions where a group would form a theatrical company and put on outdoor performances of things like Shakespeare’s plays. Those were usually sponsored by the town and sometimes the local nobleman.
