Answer The English were mostly interested in getting the colonies populated as quickly as possible. They made this economically attractive by providing cheap land, and low taxes. They also offered religious liberty not available in England and largely gave the colonies a great deal of freedom in developing their own political structures. Most of the ventures into the New World were private groups of businessmen or religous groups who got approval from the King to set up a colony, but were pretty much on their own from there. This laissez faire approach worked well until the British decided to exert greater control over political and economic issues in the 1760’s. I hope this helps!
