What was the Easter Rising in Ireland during 1916?

The Easter Rising was an attempt to overthrow the British administration and establish an independent Irish Republic. It began when Padraig Pearse read out the “Proclamation of the Irish Republic” in front of the G.P.O in O’Connell Street (then known as Sackville Street) in Dublin on Easter Monday 1916. The men involved were members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Republican Army (which had nothing to do with the terrorist organisation the I.R.A that became active in the 1960s).
