Before Castro, Cuba was a dictatorship under the rule of Fulgencio Batista, who came into power in 1933 as a result of a rebellion by the armed forces, known as the “Revolt of the Sergeants.” Batista (whose full name was Ruben Fulgencio Batista Zaldivar) overthrew the liberal government of Gerardo Machado and entered a partnership with the U.S. mafia, establishing a 30-year regime of corruption.
