What was the biggest problem when Petco Park opened?
“Food and beverage service was our Achilles’ heel for the first year to year and a half. Somewhere in the middle of the second season, we really got a handle on it. Remember, we had to completely redo our hot dog. When we opened, we couldn’t grill our hot dogs. We spent the whole winter of 2004 rebuiding our hot dog. They weren’t where they needed to be. Our fans like the way we’ve pulled in a lot of local branded items. We’re still looking to do more. We upgraded staff as well as what we offered. We’re proud of where we are now. Food has gone from weakness to strength.” Q: What problem is lurking in the future? A: “We have to stay on top of parking and traffic because there are going to be challenges as the landscape of the surrounding area changes. Over the next couple of years, we’re going to lose some parking spaces to new growth. How do we replace those?” Q: There is a quirkiness to Petco Park I haven’t seen at other new ballparks. You can’t walk around Petco Park without going up
