What was the Battle of Germantown?
The Battle of Germantown was fought during the Revolutionary War, on October 4, 1777. The American army – known formally as the Continental Army – was personally commanded by General George Washington. The American army officially fought on behalf of the 13 colonies, governed by the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, the capital of the fledgling nation. They formally convened in what was then known as the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall – in Old City Philadelphia. The British Army – known formally as the Royal Army – was personally commanded by General Sir William Howe. It fought on behalf of King George III – the king of Great Britain – and the British Parliament.
