All of the bald eagles released or produced on Santa Cruz Island have an antenna sticking out of its back that is part of a backpack-mounted transmitter package. The package consists of two components: a 70 gram solar-powered GPS transmitter and a small VHF radio, which is attached to the side of the GPS unit.
