What was so sad about the childrens crusade?

I cannot cite the source, but my memory seems to call on that the two movements were related perhaps the leaders (young men) had known of each other. At any rate they set out one by sea the other a land route taking them across at least one mountain range. Unfortunately the elements were severe, many were lost to the element of cold and sea storms, what would later arrive would have been ineffective and therefore I agree many were sold as slaves. Interestingly, if I am not mistaken I believe this is where the childrens story of the pied piper comes into existence.
