What was significant about Renaissance art?

The mainland European artistic Renaissance was all about really realistic, 3-D represenations of the world (light and shadow) and human form (DiVinci was known for starting with a skeleton and then adding muscle then flesh). The English Renaissance (also known as the early modern period) was different from the European Renaissance because it took place a century or more later and because the English art was still 2-D (except for the Dutch or French artists who travelled to England and painted there).
