What was revolutionary about the reign of terror?

Though most people will agree that the Reign of Terror wasn’t a proud time in France’s history, it was revolutionary in that the middle class of the population finally stood up against the king and killed the entire royal family as well as many other government officials. I’m sure the transition of power could’ve been done less violently, but either way, it was finally clear who held the power.
