It was first called Project Sign, then Project Grudge, and finally, starting in 1952, Project Blue Book. Following the end of Blue Book in December, 1969, the files were first shipped to the Air Force Archives and then to the U.S. National Archives in Washington, DC. In 1976 they were made available to the public on microfilm, though the names and identifications of all witnesses were blacked out. In 1998, an uncensored set of microfilms of the case files were discovered, and made available to researchers and the press by the Fund for UFO Research.
