What was “Operation Shamrock?
I imagine the one you mean was the one that came to light in 1975 and was a huge spying operation carried out by US government agencies against their own countrymen. It had started during the Second World War, but by 1975 it had built up a list of about 75,000 suspected “enemies” of President Nixon. In 1945-1946, the Irish Red Cross organized Operation Shamrock; over a thousand children from Germany, Austria, but also from France and England, were taken to Ireland, where they lived with Irish families (on the continent, people were starving). Some of these children later were adopted by the Irish host families.
