What was lacking in the Southern California legal community that convinced UCI to start a law school?
There are three public law schools in Northern California and, until UC Irvine School of Law was founded, only one in Southern California. At the same time, the region is home to close to two-thirds of the state’s inhabitants, many of whom have critical and as-yet unmet legal needs. In addition, increasing numbers of large corporations are establishing offices in Southern California and national law firms are enlarging their existing local offices or opening new ones. In other words, we believe (and the legal community does as well) that Southern California overall will benefit tremendously from the presence of a second great public law school.
