he cut off the arm of a bird and plugged the trachea (airway) to see if they could breathe through their bones (i.e. air sacs). The bird died of blood loss but not suffocation. Bottom line, they can breathe through their arms (sort of). But remember, air sacs are not involved in gas exchange.
