Actually, Henry Clay and Calhoun were able to work out a compromise whereby the tariff was dramatically reduced and Southern States agreed to abide by it. This prevented a Civil War under Jackson, which probably would have been won by the South–because over the next 30 years, the North increased substantially in size and industrialization.
