What was it like working with Adam Jones (who guests on “Hall of the Dead” and “Wavering Radiant”)?
He’s kind of like me, in that when he’s working on something he kicks everyone else out of the studio. When it came the time to do his tracks, he was in the studio with Joe. He was comfortable with Joe in there because they had worked together in the past on the Tool record. But they spent a day in the studio and neither of them were completely happy with what Adam had come up with. So Adam actually wound up doing the tracks at home and gave them to Joe, and Joe worked them into the final mix. So there was no actual in-studio contact with Adam; all of our contact with him had been outside the studio, playing on tour or whatever. I mean, that’s a similar route that I take when I’m doing vocals. I feel like it’s really hard to concentrate when there’s a lot of other people around. The act of creation is kind of a private one. When you’re in the studio, there’s a lot of other people listening and it sort of slows down the process, so I can appreciate what he did. So did you kick everyone
