What was it like in the victorian era?
Victorians lived by ridged rules or codes. Manners was very important and a person’s place in society was set. People who were upper class didn’t associate with people who were “common or lower class”. Even things like the dinner table was set in a particular way, but as a stranger you could enter a dining room in a private home and know who was who. If there was an unmarried woman in the family she would live with her oldest brother and at the dinner table she was placed in a spot that was reserved for her. He was expected to support her and take care of her until she married or died. When someone died in Victorian society black was required for a year and often a lock of the person’s hair was kept and set into a broach or pin. Everything had a reason for existing and there were rules for all occasions. People who didn’t follow the codes or rules were not treated very well and even shunned.
