It was okay. I didn’t come out until I was in Year 12, so I was never the ‘gay kid’ at school. If you’re not the captain of the football team but you’re good at writing you are often discounted as gay. There were certainly a lot of times where you’d feel like you couldn’t talk about it. Everyone assumes you’re straight, particularly when you’re not an overly camp and obviously gay guy. So sometimes it’s tricky to talk about that stuff. What was the reaction to your coming out? It was generally awesome, everyone was really supportive. I’ve been really lucky with my friends and my family; my parents have been great. Surprised, really, I guess. I’d never had a girlfriend but I think people were kind of surprised in their own way, then they got used to the idea. Do you think coming out helped to get you into the limelight? I don’t know.
