The telegraph was being used more often and the telephone was in its developmental stage. The railroad was also being used more often, along with the increase in public transportation usage. Photography was beginning to prosper as well, specifically, the Daguerreotype was allowing people to be recorded in moments, and this put a new twist on writers, who were trying to record moments in words, rather than actual images.
