What was Humpty Dumptys mass after he fell?
I don’t think I can answer this quantitatively… but it’s certainly true that energy was conserved in the universe throughout the whole process. If you consider Humpty as a system: he gained kinetic energy as he fell due to external work done by gravity, but his rest mass did not change. When he hit the ground, however, this kinetic energy had to go somewhere. Some of it left the system in the form of sound or heat. Some kinetic energy could conceivably have gone into creating fragments of higher total rest mass than the original Humpty. Any difference would be very very tiny though, and I doubt that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men could possibly measure it.
