Hitler was Austrian by birth but chose to serve in the German army during the First World War, which qualified him for German citizenship. There are various spellings of the family name, including “Hittler” and “Hiedler.” His father’s birth name was Schickelgruber: he was illegitimate but later recognized by his biological sire, who was named Hitler, so Hitler’s father adopted the name. Adolf Hitler himself was never named Schickelgruber, contrary to some popular stories circulated at the time.
