What was going on in Spain during the 1930s?
The Spanish Civil War took place from 1936-39. Afterwards, when WWII broke out, Hitler wanted Franco’s (Franco was the victor in the Sp civil war and dictator of the country until 1975) assistance, but the country was too destroyed to help. Germany had helped Franco’s nationalist troups during the Sp civil war, and to “pay him back” and to keep Spain out of the world war, Franco allowed Hitler to use the northern Spanish city of Guernica as target practice for the German air bombers. Picasso’s painting commemorates the destruction, violence and betrayal of the bombing of Guernica. Buena suerte con la tarea!
