What was going on in America in terms of racial discrimination and poverty in 1968?
By 1968 racial discrimination was on the way out. All the legality pieces were in place and it was merely a matter of the environment catching up to the legalities. The Vietnam War was raging and huge numbers of blacks were serving in the military in combat roles, at home the anti-war movement was going into full swing, the summers were heated by riots and entire sections of cities burned by riots and the US was at war with itself. Bobby Kennedy was a man who’d ridden up on the coattails of his brother, same as young Teddy. He was a contender for president not because of anything he was, or had done, but because he was a brother to JFK who’d become a saint, a martre in the eyes of much of the public. Teddy, meanwhile, had run an automobile off a bridge in a drunken incident and drowned the young woman with him, then run away and attempted to make up a story to cover himself. Things were going crazy in the US, the Kennedys were all lowlife scum and Sirhan was probably exactly what he wa
