Going to work (which means talking with colleagues, waiting for the machines finally to work, mourning about the boss and the plan, having lunch and doing a bit work besides), searching the shops for products that are hard to get or might have a shortage soon (especially those coming from western countries), spending the evening with friends and family, trying to repair the car or something else (something is allways broken), turning off the radio or TV, when the news start… It’s been a retreat to privacy for most people. Waving a little flag on May 1st maybe and that’s it about communism. People arranged with the government, let it do government’s work and only cared about things, they could really change. In these times, solidarity seems to have been a bit more important. You couldn’t get ahead of others anyhow, as the wages were rather equal and most luxury products were hard to find.
