What was Charles 1st like as king?
Charles was autocratic, as he believed he had god-given rights (and duties) to rule and did not need the authority of parliament. However, he was by no means the tyrant he was accused of being, in fact, ironically, because of the clashes with Parliament, in particular their refusal to raise taxes, he was forced to rule rather parsimoniously – avoiding wars and grand adventures.
