What was Canadas role in the Korean War?
The Canadian military played a large role as part of the UN forces. The first Canadian ground troops to arrive in Korea were the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. They won the US Distinguished Unit Citation for their actions near Kapyong. 2 PPCLI is the only Canadian unit authorized a US streamer (battle honor) attached to the pike on their colors. The Royal Canadian Regiment saw a lot of action throughout the Korean War. Canada paid dearly for its role in keeping South Korea free. Of the 26,791 Canadians who fought for South Korea’s freedom, 1,558 gave their lives. 516 Canadian servicemen are forever remembered in the Korea Book of Remembrance.
