What was basketball hoops made out of when basketball was first invented?
Peach baskets were the first hoops. Someone with a ladder would take the ball out after a score. Eventually, someone figured out that if you cut the bottom out of the basket, you no longer will need the ladder. The goals were placed 10 feet off the ground, because the gym had a second story with a track going around it. the walls of the gym were 10 feet off the ground. That’s why the goals are 10 feet off the ground. As the game became more popular, the home teams fans would get behind the opposing teams goals on the second floor track and try to knock the ball away from the basket. So teams started putting chicken wire up behind the goals to keep fans from interfering with shots. The chicken wire began to be used by shooters to direct shots toward the basket. The chicken wire was actually the first backboards.
