What was ancient gymnastics used for?
Gymnastics was sometimes used for entertainment; ancient Egyptian art shows acrobats performing for the Pharaohs. The Greeks used gymnastics for physical fitness, which was very important to them. They built gymnasiums for physical training, and held contests (which were called, of course, the Olympics). The Romans used gymnastics for military training; they’re the ones who developed the wooden horse, for soldiers to practice mounting and dismounting.
