KLAUS-PETER MLLER: Ten years ago, some American politicians and a number of representatives of German business, including Hilmar Kopper (former CEO of Deutsche Bank) and myself, came together. After our talks, I asked Kopper whether he thought that the withdrawal of American troops would lead to American politicians visiting Germany less frequently and whether, ultimately, this would mean that existing ties would gradually weaken. In particular, I regretted that, as a result, we would not be able to present our views to American politicians as intensively as we had in the past. Kopper thought I was right and asked me whether I had any idea of what could be done. I replied: Mr. Kopper, if I were to work out a plan for inviting 10 to 15 American politicians every year to Germany, and the three major German banks were willing to sponsor the whole thing to get it started and then, once it was running properly, we could place it under the auspices of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Industri
