What was a typical snack food for children in the past?
If you lived in the country (or even in suburbs) you would scavenge blackberries, wild strawberries, apples and pears according to the season. Liquorice root was also used to chew on, especially useful as its very sweet but doesnt make you thirsty. Typical snack food if you had money was a penny bun or a half-penny worth of chips – money would be pooled and the food shared. At home you would attempt to raid the cake or biscuit tin, hoping parents wouldnt notice just a bit missing… Eating between meals was actively discouraged for children. If you asked you might be offered something unappetising like a dry crust. “if you’re not bread hungry, then you’re not hungry” would be the answer if you asked for anything else.
