What vocal compressor is used in M-Audio Session?
Session, which I don’t use but just read up on, uses plug-in compression. Compression is typically used in vocals because it creates a uniform take by boosting the softer passages and reducing peaks. The vocals can then be put at a level to remain present througout the track. Sometimes vocals will be gated to reduce background noise. Make sure to allow the gate to open and close naturally, but reduce the noise floor on inactive passages. EQ could also make a big difference. Even just the most basic hi-pass at 200hz on the vocal track can cut alot of rumble and hum from the mix. This can change the quality of the final mix dramatically. Finally, check out Reaper (which I also do not use). It’s (not entirely, but has a very gracious trial period) free multitrack recording software that comes with VST plugins-including compression, eq, and gate. There are plenty of free VST plugins out there for you to pull down. Play around with the presets to learn and you can’t go wrong.
