On 12/10/48 the U.N. adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The preamble to the declaration begins: Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
