What usages of copyrighted material are considered permissible Fair Use?
Fair use of copyrighted material including reproductions for purposes of criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research are not considered infringements of copyright. There is no specific rule as to what portions of a work or what situations constitute fair use, however, courts will consider several factors in determining whether use is fair. The factors considered are the purpose and character of the use, including whether for commercial or nonprofit educational purposes, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. One should always include a citation to give credit to the source of a portion of a work used, however, such a citation does not affect whether the use of the copyrighted material would be considered fair use.
