I am going to buy a HP MediaSmart EX-475 Home Server and i want to buy a UPS. I plan on installing an additional internal 500GB HD as well as an external 500GB HD. I need a UPS that will enable the server enough time to power down. This server has a 500W power supply. I dont know if i have to find a UPS that can support 500W or not. If your server has a power rating of 500w, which can be found on a data tag on back of unit, you need to have a ups with more capacity than the rating of the server. If you have 500 watts go with a 750w or a 1kw UPS. You can get one of these fairly cheap from a wholesale club, or Ebay. How much time does the server need to power down. This will give you an idea of what type to look for. But yes if you have 500w you need something bigger so it is not running at full load. Typically the bigger the UPS you get, the more backup time you get.
