What types of woods are commonly used in the production of houses?
Pine & fir. Softwoods. This is for the framing. Composite sheet goods are used for the roof, subfloors, outside walls. Trims are mdf, fir, oak or maple in most cases. Interior stairs generally use spruce & fir. Finished floors are mostly hardwood. Oak, maple & birch are the most popular. A few choose softwood like pine, spruce, & fir. Sidings are cedar, various woods or “Hardy” board (composite). Cedar shingles can be used on the roof. Decks & exterior stairs can be cedar or pressure treated fir.
